After a disastrous last few days in Eritrea and South Sudan, battling some serious food poisoning, I made it to the UK, breezing through security smart-gates without even having to talk to a human – my Aussie passport acting as a cheat code. It’s always a wild feeling returning to the western world, and everything feeling back to “normal”, knowing how many people I met in the past few weeks would love to leave their country for an easier life in a western country.
I’ve now travelling to 189 countries, with only 8 remaining to visit. I have plans to do a big overland trip crossing all of Russia in August, but I don’t really have any plans to travel to any more countries for the next few months, because of the difficult entry requirements/visas.
To be honest, I’m quite doubtful as to when I will be able to visit those remaining countries as well as I’m not particularly excited to visit places which require a mandatory tour guide/police escort. I will get there eventually, just not exactly in a rush.
So I am staying in the UK now, working on my book, writing this blog, seeing what the next chapter in life holds.
There is something else I’ve had on my mind, that I want to work on.
In this day and age, everyone is so stuck on this social media algorithms full of rage bait/ai slop/brain-rot. Social media has become less “social” and more “media”. When I was younger, and first started painting, I used Instagram to look at photos from other writers/explorers, but now trying to browse the app, you are just bombarded with “reels” from people you do not even follow.
I had an idea, an experiment, to try and make a discord/telegram group, for the newer generation, to share photos/talk graffiti/exploring/travelling and to connect without all the distractions. Bring the “social” back to “social media”.
There’s a good chance the project will be a flop, but it’s worth a try. I’ll add some incentives for new members, I’m thinking maybe sticker giveaways, and I most post some free guides, like travel hacks/tips, and some advice on how to make a living online/travel the world without having to work a job.
